Shifting cultural perceptions of our economy conference

Author: Friends Provident Foundation

Date: 31/03/2026

There are common stories, metaphors and perceptions that are frequently used to talk about the economy. It can be likened to a household budget, a machine or a force of nature. These are very powerful and have dominated how we feel about the potential to change our economic system.

At Friends Provident Foundation, we believe that the way we understand and think about the economy shapes how we might imagine ways to change it.

What stories need to change, and what stories need to be heard, for the economy to change?

Through our Shifting Cultural Perceptions grant programme, this is exactly what we’re exploring.

We’re one year into the Shifting Cultural Perceptions grant programme, which was a one-off funding call which has now closed. The conference will bring together the funded grant partners, stakeholders and others. There will be opportunities to share your experiences and learn from others, to deepen our collective understanding of what it might take to shift cultural perceptions of our economy towards a fair and sustainable one.

Hazel Sheffield, journalist and author of Frontierlands, will talk about the people and communities she’s met who are reimagining and reviving Britain’s abandoned places. Hazel will lead a discussion about the community-led developments we see around us and the opportunities they present to help us face the challenges of our economy and climate change.

Through plenary and discussions, you’ll have chance to explore how we can begin to shift perceptions and beliefs about the economy, about what it is and what it could be, and share your own experiences.

We invite you to join us.
