What is the issue?
The coronavirus pandemic has exposed the inequalities and flaws in our economy. It does not work for the majority of people, those with some of the most important roles in society struggle in low paid, precarious jobs and scientists’ warnings about the dangers of environmental collapse are ignored.
However the pandemic has also shifted the government’s mindset, forcing it into economic interventions that were previously unthinkable. There is a public appetite and a policy window for bold new ideas if we can build support around them.
What will the project try to achieve?
The New Economics Foundation will provide policy leadership at the heart of the movement to Build Back Better from the pandemic. It will develop ‘common sense’ policies with public appeal to support people and businesses through the crisis. Alongside this, it will work with allies to mobilise a powerful coalition to to advocate for these ideas and win support for a recovery that is fairer, just and more sustainable.
Who might be interested in this project?
Campaigners, policy makers and practitioners, grass roots groups, trade unions and businesses, local and regional authorities, NGOs, think tanks, media commentators and journalists, funders.
